I promised to keep you informed about the performance of our heat pump. Last month, the invoice from Enbridge said we used less gas than 70% of the homes in our area. This month they report that we are better than 97% of the homes in our area!!! I suspect that the difference is due to the fact that they read our meter every second month and use an estimate in between. So the average would be more accurate, 83%. I have signed up to read our meter myself monthly. I will keep you informed.
At present, our only use of natural gas is for water heating: showers and dish washer. I am trying to trim my time in the shower. Now that I have told you, I have to do it. Right? Dorothy uses cold water for the laundry. If we were better than 100% of the homes in the area, I would be washing my armpits with icicles plucked from the eves and licking my dinner plate clean. During the winter, the gas furnace will not come on until the outside temperature is -10 °C or lower. In December I will try ear muffs and a sweater sandwich. (Not really. But maybe. Why not?)
Of course, this is more than you wanted to know. I am telling you as a reminder that all of us, individually and collectively, are responsible for leaving the planet in good condition for those who follow us. Everything we do is potentially harmful. We can limit the damage by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Some of this can be done without goosebumps.
We have a say in what happens next. Make a plan.
Baby steps and ice cream. Feels so good to be trying.
