What will be will be unless we choose otherwise. I know, too complicated for a hit song. Don't mess with success. But to tell the truth...

Early in my teaching career, I got boosted onto the hierarchical ladder when my department head was promoted to vice principal and I became acting head of science. People thought I would do OK as a department head. Logical next step. From the start, it was not the job for me. I was expected to promote the interests of my department in competition with other departments. I just didn't want to play that game. There were some ambitious department members who kept pushing, leading from behind. I was in their way, so I quit. They approved. They got to move on up. 

Over the years, three of them became head of science. One of them discovered it wasn't for him either. He quit and became successfully self-employed. Another progressed up the ladder as quickly as possible ending in administration at the district board of education. A third found his vocation as department head and continued in that role until retirement.

Good for them. Don't misunderstand. I am not recommending quitting unless there are good reasons. What will be will be unless we choose otherwise. The future is ours to mess with.
